Community Futures honors Parkland volunteers

By Audrey Kotak

Community Futures Parkland (CFP) has made their selections for this year’s volunteer awards and they include Becky Novalkowski of Grandview and Charlene Gulak of Gilbert Plains.

CFP launched this initiative to recognize the huge impact volunteerism has on our communities. Each honoree receives $300 to be donated to his/her charity or community project of choice.

Becky Novalkowski was nominated by Cherise Hubley for her involvement with the community. She coaches junior and varsity boys and girls volleyball and basketball at the school. Whenever music is needed at a school event or in her church, she takes part. As well, Becky is chairing the Old Tyme Picnic this year after getting involved with it last year. She says with a laugh, "I don’t really think

Picnic plans taking shape
The Old Tyme Picnic Committee is planning many different and many of the same events as in previous years for the weekend of July 19th & 20th.

Beginning on Friday, there will be a supper along with live musical entertainment provided by various home grown musicians. Saturday will consist of a pancake breakfast, slo-pitch, beer gardens, concession booth, Mighty Farm Duo competition, senior lawn bowling and musical entertainment all day long!

In the evening, there is a special supper planned, a parade, and a dance. We need volunteers to help organize all of these events as well as participants.

On Sunday, there is a Museum Day planned, a supper and family dance as well as fireworks!

Ways to be involved are by volunteering, getting your musical friends together to play at Wilson park, pull out your baseball bats and gloves and enter a team, sign up for senior lawn bowling, or find your farming buddy and compete against the other farmers in and around Grandview.

Let’s all get active and involved in our community Grandview! Small towns like ours needs extra help from its citizens to create a great weekend. This weekend attracts many visitors to our community. We all need to work together to make it a great weekend for ourselves and our visitors!

If you have any other ideas or need more information about the Old Tyme Picnic feel free to contact Brad Kempf: 546-2044, Jeremy Sytnick: 546-2373, or Becky Novalkowski: 572-5229.

There will be senior men’s baseball at Wilson Park this summer as the Grandview Lakers have reorganized and entered the South East Senior Baseball League out of Saskatchewan.

The team has been accepted on probation for the first year will full membership to be decided next season. The four other teams competing in the league are defending champion Melville Bison, Willowbrook Royals, Yorkton Jr. Cards and Canora Supers.

The 12 game regular season will see the Lakers have 6 home games with the first scheduled for May 24th. Playoffs are slated to start during the second week of July. Bob Stroud will once again be the voice of the Lakers as he will be calling the home games.

There will be no admission charged for the public to watch. Fundraising details will be worked out before the first game.

The team is also hoping to organize a tournament during the Old Tyme Picnic weekend.
